STEM round 5

Picture A
Picture B

“The teen playing tennis in Figure below is having fun. The other teen in the same figure is working hard studying for an exam. You can tell by their faces which teen is doing work — or can you? Would it surprise you to learn that the teen who is working is the one who is having fun playing tennis, while the teen who is studying isn’t doing any work at all? The reason why has to do with how work is defined in physics.” Ck – 12 (Chapter 16.1)

Well, It’s amazed me as much as it does to you. According to Google, work means an activity involving mental or physical effort done in order to achieve a purpose or result. However, In physic, according to Ck-12 Work means, work means the use of force to move an object. So the girl in the picture a is working and girl in picture b is not working because she does not apply any force. ( in physic)

Filming/Acting

To be honest, I have been excited for this exploration since the beginning of the year and still excited in the last round of the school year. Acting is always on my passion list. When I set plans or goals, it would always be on the top. In addition, I have heard that we have abroad facilitators from LA – Los Angeles is always been my dream city- which makes me, even more, exhilarating for this exploration.

The two stars from LA

Lianne O’Shea
Aviv Rubinstien

Finally, round five is coming. Lianne O’ shea is our acting facilitator and Aviv Rubinstien as our filming and writer facilitator. They are quite famous. Lianne has been in a lot of movies. Aviv has been a director, writer, and editor a lot. We spend the first week to know each other. The rest are all learning about different thing in the film industry.

Story

Storytelling, everyone loves story. Everyone can tell stories in different ways with different techniques. However, the best story will always need something called, Conflict. If your story has no conflict, it would be a documentary or a boring story. We also learn about monomyth, known as the hero’s journey, which is another step leading your story to be even more interesting. Screenplay, is the script for filming. After learning about everything, we wrote it all in screenplay application call Fade In.

Cinematography

“There are 2, 799, 360 shots that you can have in your film, so don’t only just have wide shot and wide shot the whole movie,” Aviv told us with caution. We explored size of shots, angle of shot, lens, aperture, motion, and iso, which is short for SALAMI. We learn a lot, by a lot I meant a lot.

Acting

I had two weeks to learn acting with Lianne. Acting is so much fun. I just realize that actors also need as much warm up as the athletics, since they need to express their feeling and emotion a lot. We had a lot of warm up and learn different fun activities with Lianne. She teaches us different techniques to be a successful actor. “You need to know about your character,” she told us gently. In order to know about your character, you need to know their desire, and the given circumstance to the character. It sounds really simple, but it’s not that straightforward either. We also practice by using different scene. One of them is the shoulder touching from Into the Spider Verse movie. It was really gratification to try it with our friend and it’s also challenging.

My Screenplay

We have two weeks to produce a short film ( about ten minutes). First, our facilitators, Aviv, Lianne, A-J and Jillian ( A-J and Jillian are coming from Los Angeles to assist us with filming) select the top three script, that is producible, has a good story plot and fun to make. My screenplay was one of the top three. Wow, UNBELIEVABLE! Next, we read the three screenplays together in order to select the one that we all want to produce. Reach and Raksa screenplays are really amazing. I can imagine when we shoot Reach’s screenplay, it is going to be really fun to shot this film. Raksa’s screenplay is really marvelous with a really cool story plot. When it’s the turn to read my script, everyone started to blush with surprise reactions. When it comes to decision, mine was selected. However, I like everyone screenplay, and I think they are unique in different ways.

Read: The Three of You (Stupid Love)

The Three of You is the title of my screenplay. The Three of You is about teenage love. Selfishness, switching couple, triangle love, selfish love – love someone for self-benefit – are the reasons for writing this story. “One day, I’ll write the story” I have promised myself until I am in this exploration. On the last week of our exploration, I and my classmate are working on producing the film. Wait to watch this mind-blowing short film!

Watch our film: The Three of You

Big Thanks to Aviv and Lianne. What you have gave: me is more a precious diamond because instead of giving me the diamond, you give me the knowledge of finding diamonds by myself.

Math Round 5

Algebra

Algebra is one of everyone’s fears. This round, we fully get into algebra basic. I have learned some basic algebra before. However, I forgot most of it.  Algebra makes no sense. For example, A+B = 24, it does not make any sense in this case. However, it might in other cases. Other math teachers always tell their students that algebra always needs in life. Well, everyone doesn’t need algebra to live, but it would be good to live with knowing how to use algebra. It is such a pain for everyone this round. “The more you go the harder it would be.” this phrase seems to be everywhere around campus. For me, it’s hard to learn algebra, but as long as I go farther, I could catch more thing along the way with the help of different observation. For example, if I am to solving algebra equation problem, I would give myself a smaller number. Instead of 125 pages in 59 minutes, I would think in my head as 10 pages in 6 minutes for an example. It would give me a quicker and easier to find the way to solve the problem. Again, you don’t need to algebra to live your life, but your life would be much easier with knowing algebra. Since I want to have a better life, I would practice and learn more algebra during the summer break to get ready for math class next year.

English Literacy Round 5

To Kill a Mockingbird Book Review

To Kill a Mockingbird, the title of this book already catches my attention. Whenever, I search on google about the book to read, best novel, or book must read before die, the result amazed me, there would always be To Kill a Mockingbird on the list. I always wonder what makes this book really special.

Some influences throughout Harper Lee’s life inspired her to write To Kill a Mockingbird. The book was published in July, 11th 1960, it is 59 years old (2019) already. However, there are a lot of people who still reading this book. What makes it so special? Harper Lee must makes a  lot of really great plans, outlines, and a lot of deep thinking to write this one special book. When she said Mockingbird, she does not only mean Mockingbird, but she could mean a million things.

Since this book is really highly recommended from a lot of people, I decided to pick it as my novel study. The book is a lot about racism, discrimination, and society. I could not tell when I started to read it. There are a lot of scenes when Scout (narrator), Jem (Scout’s brother), and Dill (Scout’s neighbor’s relative) having a lot of fun with their childhood life. “We’re askin’ him real politely to come out sometimes and tell us what he does in there- we said we wouldn’t hurt him and we’d buy him ice cream,” Dill said. After reading that’s scene, I could not forget how adorable they are and keep saying those lines over and over again. It also reminds me of when I was younger doing silly things, that kids would do. Almost at the end of the first half of the book is when I realize that the book is about racism. Francis called Atticus, “nigger lover” just because he is Tom Robinson’s lawyer.

To know more what’s happening in this breathtaking book, read To Kill a Mockingbird. Harper Lee means more than what’s in the book. You must read it before you DIE.

Technology/Multimedia Round 5

This round is one of the coolest rounds for me. We have the whole round ( about three weeks) to work on independence project. We can create our own project base on what we have learned or something related to technology. I personally choose to work on python coding using Trinket. First, I started with the original code that the trinket has provided, then started to add on with the different idea. I started with a secret message, which is already provided, then I started to support the idea with secret emoji, and secret password, together it forms the secret language. I am a little behind the team because I have senior exploration. One thing that is even going worst, which make me a headache is that on the last day of the school year for this class, I realize that I lost my code. My pressure diamond is sunk into the ocean sea. I don’t really know what is going on. However, it is a lot to say with responsibilities.

The sunshine after a bad storming, I got up after an unfortunate circumstance. Now I am working on Photoshop. Photoshop and photography are always been passionate. However, I decided not to work on it because there are a lot of people who were working on photoshop. One of the hardest parts of photoshop a photo is to choose a photo. Sometimes, I have the idea of what I am going to do. However, when I go to my file, there’s no picture that is good enough for my idea. It’s also really difficult to learn how to photoshop each image as we want it to be. However, when those problems come to me, I would search photo on the internet and use Photoshop Essential as my tutorial website. I find myself enjoy doing it, so when I am free, I would photoshop pictures to use my time productivities. Besides making your photo looks cool, photoshop image also make your more creative and more productive.

Rebel Wilson is a 39 years old Australian actor. I started to know her by Perfect Pitch movie, and I think that she play the character really well, she is such a good actor. In this picture, I blend her picture with a blending color because I think that she is a rock star in my heart.

What’s about rainbow eyes? It’s seem likes there are not many eyes that have the rainbow color. In this picture, I wanted to show that everyone can be as creative as they can be and see the world in different and many ways.

This photo was taken one year ago ( 2018). This is just an experiment that I have made using grid and color that have provided in photoshop.

Khmer Round 4

I speak, write, listen and learn in English a lot every day and I only have four hours of Khmer class. I know that my Khmer writing, spelling are going down slowly. I was a great student at dictation somehow, I most likely to get a full score in the class. However, I just realized that I only get 70%-90% for dictation in Khmer class. This is because I don’t read a lot of Khmer books. Life is about having mistake today and learn about it tomorrow and never make the same mistake the day after tomorrow. I started reading more Khmer novel and other Khmer book because the more we read the better we write.

English Literacy Round 4

The theme of this round is happiness. In this round, we learned what happiness is, and how to achieve happiness. We read a lot of article and our final assessment is to write how to be happy when in life circumstance. I decided to write How to be happy when you have a lot of homework because, to me personally, I think that a lot of Liger Students have a lot of homework, and sometime they need happiness while they need to deal with all of their homework.

How to be Happy When You Have a Lot of Homework

When you study at college, high school or even middle school, you will find yourself getting busy with lots and lots of homework. A study from a researcher found out that less than 1 % of students said that homework is not a stressor (Levy, 2017). This means you might be one of the other 99%, who have been stressed with homework. Below are the three strategies that you can use to be happy when you have a lot of homework and start to enjoy doing it.

Listening to Music

If you are a big fan of music, this solution can help you not to be stressed while doing your homework. Researchers explain that music makes people more productive (“Music-an Aid to Productivity”, 1972). “music can make the task seem less boring, and it can also increase arousal and alertness” ( Cantor, 2013). Before you start doing your homework, first, create a playlist of your favorite songs or from your favorite artists. After you have your own playlist full of your favorite songs, put your headphones on. Then adjust the right volume for yourself. * It shouldn’t be over 60%.  Now you can enjoy doing your homework with music accompany your heart and your head. As Angely Rose -student at Liger leadership Academy- tests out the strategy of listening to music, “It helps me to find beauty in the hard work, and helps me relax while coping with the stress of work. As the result it makes me happy to work” she said. It seems like listening to music has a really big impact on working.  I encourage you to give music a try.

Move to a different environment

Sometimes, you are not in the right place to do your homework. A lot of books, technology devices, and the crowded area cannot help you to have your homework done easily. Being outdoors would be the best choice for you. First, find a fresh place that is surrounded by nature. Then the fresh air, bird sound, green tree, and blossom flowers can vanish your stress and it finds you the real happiness even though you have a lot of homework. According to a Forbes writer, Andrea Loubier, wrote an article “How Offices Are Innovating To Improve Our Happiness, Productivity And Well Being” mention that one of the four main factors that can boost our productivities, health and happiness is nature.  Nature can increase our productivity by 15 %. Grab a Cold Drink

When you are stress, sleepy or bored, would you like to go and grab a cold drink or cold water? The same thing when you are stress with a lot of homework. First, take a break, then wash your face, a shower would be great for you too.  “Just like taking a cold shower releases body stress, drinking cold water has the same effect on your body by working on the immunity. ” (2018). Next, go and grab a glass of cold water or grab your favorite drink from the refrigerator. Take a sip of the cold drink, and “Ahhh” you would feel fresh and ready to get back to work on your homework. Now you can do your homework happily without stress.

Outdoor Leadership

Have you ever known that you can find your way back home by using your watch? Honestly, I did not. Have you ever known that there are hornbills and pine tree in Cambodia? I did not, and it amazed me when I know it. It all comes in one in Outdoor Leadership exploration. Base on the name, we explore thing outdoor with leadership. During these seven weeks, we observe nature, learn about caring and loving nature, emergency first aid and living with nature. We went to two trips. The first trip was in Kirirom and that was the time I realized that Cambodia has hornbills and pine trees. We trekked for hours to reach our goal, heaven cliff and it is the cliff of heaven. After we arrived there, we did a lot of activities. One of my favorites is roasting marshmallows. It’s hard to get the good taste of marshmallow because you need to pass the hot fire and stay for a while to wait for it until it is brown and that’s when it is a perfectly roasted marshmallow. After three weeks, we went on the second trip to Mondulkiri. We camp near the valley and we spend two days on trucking to discover the hidden waterfall in the forest. The water was cold and there are a lot of wild guppies swimming around. I also saw one fish that looks like a gecko. I don’t know why, but it swims and then pause. I really want to get it into my palm, but I’m afraid that it would be poison or something. However, I finally got it into my palm since it did not move that fast and also because I really love fishes. It was a memorable moment. We trekked back. In total, I think we trekked more than 20 km in both days. I was tired but at the same time it worth it. I found out a thing that I’ve never known, I also realized that I love trekking so much now.

STEM Round 4

In this round, we focus on motion and force. We are learning thing that we don’t really think about. One of my highlights is making a balloon-powered car. I teamed up with one of my classmates in order to make it. We built it with one bottle, two sticks, 4 water bottle caps, 1 or 2 straw, 1 balloon, glue gun, and a scissor. Here are steps by steps to make a balloon-powered car:

  1. First, lay the water down. Make a hole on the side of your water bottle, it should be big enough for a straw to go through.
  2. Then make another hole in the middle of the bottom of your water bottle, it also should be big enough for a straw to go through.
  3. Now leave that bottle with two holes away, then cut one plastic straw into two. *Make sure that those straw is going to be shorter than your sticks.
  4. Put the straws into each stick.
  5. Now glue the water bottle caps on the end of the sticks. Apply the same thing to the other three edges of the sticks.
  6. After, attach the two straw to the body of your car (water bottle) by using a glue gun. *Make sure that they are equal because you don’t want your car to be askew and end up with going in the wrong direction from what you want*
  7. Now put the balloon through the top hole to the bottom hole on the body of your car.
  8. Then glue the balloon to the end of the straw. * Make sure that you can blow through the straw to the balloon.
  9. Finally, test your balloon powered car. Now you have a balloon powered car.
